Hey all-

Just wanted to introduce myself, I am Delta7899 here at the blog, on the island, I am know as Sapphier Stirling. I am a mother, wife, confidant and paraprofessional. I am in my fourth year working one-on-one with a now 14 year old. My desire is to learn from, and enlighten the readers of this blog the diverse challenges those with Aspergers may face.

My student has passionate interests and proficiency in certain subjects; he also has a vast deal of difficulty with organization and social skills. His brain often will over process even the smallest piece of sounds. Imagine hearing 24 pencils move (that of his classmates) while doing class work. He has made substantial progress with sounds, graduating from earphones he once wore the entire day at school, to not wearing them at all. However, he always knows they are available to him.

I am so very proud of his every accomplishment and tell him often.

Delta,

That is outstanding about the student you help. If only RL had mute options on it also; I'd invoke it!

I can't be working with sounds surrounding either.

Too, I know all people are born sensate, only certain textiles and food compositions are like a total no-go. I push myself to try new things, but some... well they just make me feel squiggly and sick inside.

It offers optimism, still, to see people - such as you - do understand... and don't judge people for things :).

Thank you.

Hi Delta. It's wonderful that you are not only helping this student but also focusing on how you can help educate others by sharing your experiences with him. There is so much ignorance about what people dealing with AS have to go through, as well as misconceptions about how people with AS perceive the world.

He's lucky to have been able to work with someone as caring as you for so many years. I hope to read more about his accomplishments in the future. Very inspiring.

Delta...
Good to hear more about your student. Didn't know some of those things were ones he had trouble with...

Makes me wonder if my son might not have some sensory sensitivities (say that one 10 times real fast) that we are not aware of. He is often very quiet for a long while in group activities. We chalked it up to just getting the 'lay of the land,' figuring out where he wanted to go, getting a plan. But maybe, he is overwhelmed also. I will have to ask him.

Thanks for posting
Jamison

I am soglad he is doing better with the sound aspect of AS. There is no gauge as to haw bad this can affect the person whith it. I can not tell if mine is less or more than anothers. I do know it can be extreamly distracting. Trying to prossess all of the sounds. I know I have trained my brain to use this strangeness most of the time. Might be why I can totaly tune out everything on the bus or listen to several coversations at the same time. I will do more on my strange vision and hearing later.

I am glad he is adjusting. It is very toughto deal with ... Good job helping him :)

I am willing to bet he has some. He may not be totaly awhare of them. I know the oddities I have delt with I just figured everyone had this and never realy gave it much thought. Now I am starting to understand that I am wired differently and read stuff others write about there world, I see this may not be what "everyone else" sees or hears! It just might be what people on the spectrum see/hear.

One question I will ask does he ask for things to be repeted? Even if it seens to be load enough for him to hear it normaly? If so then there is a good chance sound is a problem for him. I know "Hearing tests say I have GREAT hearing!" I hear the words just fine. but sometimes the processing gets distracted by something. It could be anything water running a pen droped to the floor. I loose the words. I do not mean to but once I amnot sure I coped them right I ask for a re-send of data. Lost packets is a good example. I lost part of what was said.

I like text based chat because i can slowly read and re-read it sometimes. To be sure i fully understand what was sent. BTW I have text set to 60 sec in SL so i can re-read it sometimes.
